The Sacred Symbols of Goddess Lakshmi on This Necklace

This is not just a necklace — it is a wearable invocation. According to the Vishnu Purana, Lakshmi is Sri — the embodiment of all that is auspicious, beautiful, and abundant. She emerged from the Ksheer Samudra (ocean of milk) during the Samudra Manthan, seated on a fully blossomed lotus, radiating divine grace. The Devas and Asuras had churned the cosmic ocean together, and from its depths rose Devi Lakshmi — Samudratanaya, Daughter of the Sea — who chose Vishnu as her eternal consort. Every element on this necklace carries a layer of that primordial story.

The Lotus & Abhaya Mudra

Lakshmi is Padma — the Lotus Goddess. In the pendant, she sits on a lotus, the flower that grows from mud yet remains untouched by it. The lotus symbolises purity, spiritual liberation, and beauty that rises above worldly attachments. Her raised hand in abhaya mudra (blessing posture) bestows fearlessness and reassurance upon the wearer — a gesture that says “fear not, for abundance flows.” Her other hands hold and shower gold coins, representing both material wealth (artha) and spiritual richness (moksha).

The Torana Arch — Gateway to the Divine

The ornate arch framing Lakshmi on the pendant is a torana — the sacred gateway found at the entrance of Hindu and Buddhist temples since the Maurya period (3rd century BCE). It represents the threshold between the mundane and the divine. In temple architecture, the torana marks the point where the devotee leaves the material world and enters sacred space. On this necklace, the torana frames Lakshmi as the residing deity of your personal temple — a divine presence you carry with you.

Paisley (Mango/Ambi) & Shell Motifs

The paisley — known as ambi or keri in India — is one of the most ancient decorative motifs in South Asian art, symbolising fertility, abundance, and the eternal cycle of life. Its teardrop shape echoes the mango, a fruit sacred to Lakshmi and associated with love and prosperity. The shell (shankha) fans along the chain are another Lakshmi symbol — the conch shell is one of the eight auspicious objects (Ashtamangala) in Hindu tradition, and Lakshmi herself is sometimes depicted holding one, its spiral representing the infinite nature of creation.

Ashtalakshmi — The Eight Forms of Abundance

Hindu tradition honours Lakshmi not as a single goddess but as Ashtalakshmi — eight forms, each representing a different dimension of wealth. This necklace, carrying Lakshmi close to the heart, is believed to invoke all eight blessings:

1

Adi Lakshmi & Dhana Lakshmi

The primordial form and the bestower of material wealth. Adi Lakshmi is Vishnu's consort who serves the divine purpose, while Dhana Lakshmi grants gold, gems, and financial security — the most commonly worshipped form during Dhanteras and Diwali.

2

Gaja Lakshmi & Dhanya Lakshmi

Gaja Lakshmi is bathed by elephants with sacred water — she bestows royal power, majesty, and authority. Dhanya Lakshmi is the goddess of agricultural abundance, ensuring the family never goes hungry. Together, they represent external power and sustenance.

3

Santana Lakshmi & Veera Lakshmi

Santana Lakshmi blesses families with healthy children and the continuation of lineage. Veera Lakshmi bestows courage, strength, and the resolve to overcome life's challenges — the warrior spirit within.

4

Vidya Lakshmi & Vijaya Lakshmi

Vidya Lakshmi grants knowledge, wisdom, and mastery of the arts and sciences. Vijaya Lakshmi bestows victory in all endeavours — from personal goals to family prosperity. Together, they represent the inner and outer triumphs that make a life truly abundant.

Sri Suktam (Rig Veda):

ॐ हिरण्यवर्णां हरिणीं सुवर्णरजतस्रजाम्

“She who is golden-hued, radiant like the sun, adorned with gold and silver garlands”

Craftsmanship & Meenakari Artistry

From molten gold to vivid enamel — five artisans, one necklace

Lost-Wax Casting (Cire Perdue)

The Lakshmi pendant and each chain link begin as hand-sculpted wax models — the goddess's face, the lotus petals, the paisley curves, all carved by a master artisan (Kalamkar). The wax is encased in a clay-plaster mould, heated until the wax melts away, and molten 22K gold is poured into the cavity. This technique, used in India since the Harappan civilisation (3300 BCE), captures three-dimensional detail that machine stamping cannot replicate. Each casting is unique.

Meenakari Enamel — Placing Heaven on Gold

The art of meenakari traces to Persia, brought to India in the 16th century when Raja Man Singh of Amber invited five master enamellers from Lahore to Jaipur. The word itself means “the work of heaven” — from Persian mina (heaven) and kari (craft). On this necklace, a Meenakar engraves tiny channels into the cast gold, fills them with powdered glass mixed with metal oxides (cobalt for green, iron for red), and fires the piece in a kiln at 850°C. The glass fuses permanently into the gold. Gold is the preferred base because it accepts every colour of enamel and enhances brilliance — unlike silver, which only holds blue, green, and yellow.

22K Gold — The Indian Standard

At 91.67% pure gold, 22K has been the preferred purity for Indian temple and devotional jewellery for centuries. It carries the deep, warm yellow tone that devotees and families associate with divinity and prosperity — a colour that 18K and 14K gold simply cannot match. Every necklace is BIS hallmark certified with a unique HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number, verifiable on the BIS portal or app. This is our non-negotiable promise to you.

Five Artisans, One Necklace

Traditional meenakari jewellery is never the work of a single hand. The Kalamkar designs the piece and sculpts the wax model. The Goldsmith (Sonar) casts and assembles the gold components. The Meenakar applies and fires the enamel. The Ghotanwala polishes the piece after enamelling, revealing the final lustre. Finally, the Patua strings and assembles the chain links into the finished necklace. This collaborative karigar tradition ensures each artisan brings their specialised mastery to the piece you wear.

Perfect Occasions to Gift or Wear

A gold Lakshmi necklace is a gift of prosperity and divine grace — cherished across generations, festivals, and milestones

Diwali & Dhanteras

Dhanteras — the first day of Diwali — is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. Buying gold on this day is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Indian culture, believed to invite prosperity for the entire coming year. A Lakshmi necklace purchased on Dhanteras carries the triple blessing of the day: wealth (Dhan), health (Dhanvantari), and divine grace (Lakshmi). On Diwali night itself, families light diyas and perform Lakshmi Puja — wearing her image completes the devotion.

Varalakshmi Vratam

Observed on the Friday before the full moon in Shravan (July-August), Varalakshmi Vratam is specifically dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Married women perform puja seeking blessings for their family's prosperity, health, and happiness. In South India, this is one of the most important women's festivals. Gifting a gold Lakshmi necklace to a wife, mother, or daughter-in-law on this day is a gesture that carries profound cultural significance — it honours both the goddess and the woman who keeps the family together.

Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya means “that which never diminishes.” Gold purchased on Akshaya Tritiya (April-May) is believed to grow eternally in value and blessings. This is considered the single most auspicious day in the Hindu calendar to buy gold — more so even than Dhanteras. A Lakshmi temple necklace bought on this day becomes an heirloom that carries the promise of undiminishing prosperity through generations.

Weddings & Bridal Trousseau

Temple jewellery is an essential part of a traditional Indian bride's trousseau, especially in South Indian and Maharashtrian weddings. A Lakshmi necklace gifted by the bride's family carries the prayer that Devi Lakshmi will reside in the new household, bringing prosperity and harmony. The meenakari adds a distinctive touch of colour that complements both silk sarees and bridal lehengas beautifully.

Griha Pravesh (Housewarming)

When a family enters a new home, they perform Griha Pravesh puja to invoke Lakshmi and Ganesha — prosperity and auspicious beginnings. Gifting a gold Lakshmi necklace on this occasion carries the wish that Devi Lakshmi will never leave the household. It is a gift that says: “May this home always overflow with abundance.” The necklace can also be placed in the puja room during the ceremony before being worn.

Navratri & Sharad Purnima

During Navratri, the ninth night (Mahanavami) is often dedicated to Lakshmi, representing the culmination of divine feminine energy. Sharad Purnima — the full moon night in Ashwin (October) — is also called Lakshmi Purnima, when the goddess is believed to descend to earth to bless her devotees. Wearing a Lakshmi necklace during these occasions connects the devotee to the full cycle of the goddess's blessings across the festival calendar.

Goddess Lakshmi — From the Ocean of Milk to Your Heart

The story begins with Rishi Durvasa's curse. When Indra, king of the Devas, carelessly placed a sacred garland offered by the sage upon his elephant — who promptly trampled it — the enraged Durvasa cursed the three worlds to lose all their fortune. Lakshmi, embodiment of Sri (auspiciousness, power, radiance), departed from heaven. Without her, the Devas withered. Crops failed. Courage vanished. The demons, sensing weakness, invaded and conquered. It was Vishnu who showed the way: “Churn the ocean of milk, and Lakshmi will return.”

And so the greatest collaborative effort in Hindu mythology unfolded. Mount Mandara became the churning rod. Vasuki, king of serpents, became the rope. Devas pulled one end, Asuras the other. From the churning emerged poison (halahala), the wish-fulfilling cow (Kamadhenu), the divine physician (Dhanvantari), and finally — standing on a lotus in full bloom, anointed by elephants with sacred water, radiant with the brilliance of a thousand suns — Goddess Lakshmi. She surveyed all assembled beings and chose Vishnu as her eternal consort, because only in him did she find dharma without compromise. Where Vishnu preserves, Lakshmi prospers.

The Vishnu Purana tells us that Lakshmi is inseparable from Vishnu across all his avatars. When he descended as Rama, she came as Sita. When he was Krishna, she was Rukmini. She is not merely a goddess of gold coins and material wealth — the Bhagavata Purana describes her as the source of all that is beautiful, righteous, and life-sustaining. The Sri Suktam of the Rig Veda, one of the oldest hymns in existence, praises her as “golden-hued, radiant, adorned with garlands of gold and silver.”

When you wear this necklace — Lakshmi seated in her torana, framed by the ancient motifs of abundance, brought to vivid life through meenakari enamel on 22K gold — you carry with you the essence of this vast tradition. The prosperity of Dhana Lakshmi, the courage of Veera Lakshmi, the wisdom of Vidya Lakshmi, and the grace of Adi Lakshmi herself. This necklace is not a decoration. It is a prayer you wear.

Care Instructions

22K Gold Care

22K gold is softer than lower-carat gold due to its higher purity — handle with care to avoid dents on the chain links. Wipe gently with a soft lint-free cloth after each wear to remove body oils and sweat. For the plain gold surfaces (non-enamel areas), you may soak briefly in warm water with a drop of mild liquid soap, then pat dry. Never use abrasive cleaners, toothpaste, or baking soda on 22K gold.

Meenakari Enamel Care

Meenakari is glass fused to gold — beautiful and durable, but it demands respect. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, or commercial gold polish on meenakari areas — these can crack, chip, or discolour the enamel permanently. Never soak in chemical solutions. To clean enamel areas, use a barely damp soft cloth and pat dry immediately. Avoid sharp impacts — the glass can chip if struck against hard surfaces. If enamel does chip, visit us for professional touch-up repair.

Storage & Wear Tips

Store flat in the soft pouch provided, separate from other jewellery to prevent the enamel from striking against metal or stones. Put the necklace on last — after applying perfume, makeup, and lotions. Remove before bathing, swimming, or cooking. Chlorinated water and kitchen steam are particularly damaging to meenakari. Keep the storage area dry; add a silica gel packet if humidity is a concern. For professional cleaning, polishing, or enamel repair, we're always happy to help at our Chembur store.
