A necklace, part by part

Five places a necklace gives way. Find them on the map.

1

The hook and clasp

The most-handled part wears first. Hooks straighten, springs jam, heavy haars slip open.

At our bench: Replaced in matching gold, upgraded to a closure sized to the piece's weight.

2

The strands

Pearl strings stretch and fray over time, then break without much warning.

At our bench: Restrung on silk or nylon, knotted between pearls so a break loses one pearl, not thirty.

3

The stones

Kundan lifts as its lac ages. Prongs bend, stones vanish into carpets.

At our bench: Survivors re-set and tightened, lost ones matched by size and cut. Antique kundan quoted after inspection.

4

The dori

The back rope frays quietly, then lets go all at once.

At our bench: Fresh colour-matched cord, proper tassels, a sliding knot that holds. Often while you wait.

5

The pendant and bail

The bail thins and opens. Frames crack, lockets stop closing.

At our bench: Bails soldered or replaced with heavier ones. Frames reinforced, hinges made to click again.

Wedding or big function coming up?

Jewellery kept in a locker can still develop worn doris, stiff clasps or loose settings. Bring the set two to three weeks before the function so there is time to inspect it and complete the repairs. We accept pieces bought elsewhere.

Questions people ask about necklaces

Pearls, stones, doris and deadlines.

How much does necklace repair cost?

Clasp or dori jobs are modest. Stone matching and restringing cost more. One itemised quote upfront, and a photo gets a rough idea.

How long do these repairs take?

Dori and clasp jobs often finish while you wait. Restringing and stone work take days. Tell us your function date and we answer plainly whether it is possible.

Why do you knot between each pearl?

A knot limits how many pearls can fall if the strand breaks and keeps neighbouring pearls from rubbing directly against each other. We knot between the pearls when restringing.

A stone has fallen out and is lost. Can you match it?

Usually, by size, cut and shade against the survivors. Old kundan and unusual cuts are the exception. We show you the closest match before setting anything.

Can you repair kundan and antique temple necklaces?

Yes. Lac and foil age, and meenakari cannot always be retouched invisibly. We inspect the piece, explain the likely result and quote before starting.

Just the dori is torn. Is that worth a trip?

Yes. A dori replacement can often be done while you wait and helps prevent the necklace from falling when an old cord breaks.

Do you repair necklaces bought from another shop?

Yes. We inspect and quote necklaces bought elsewhere in the same way.

Can you check my whole bridal set before the wedding?

Bring the set two to three weeks before the function if you can. We check each piece and tell you which repairs can be completed before the date.

Bring the necklace, and anything that fell off it

Bring the necklace with any loose stones, pearls or torn cord. We will inspect the whole piece and give you one itemised quote.
