A broken thread is wear, not an omen

Daily rubbing wears down mangalsutra thread. Bring the piece and any loose beads with you. Simple restringing can often be done while you wait.

Every part of it, repaired

Six parts can fail. The strand shows where.

The hookKali pothGold beadsExposed threadThe vati

A gap in the beads can expose worn thread that needs restringing.

1

The thread

Snapped, or fraying where it meets the beads.

We restring the beads in their original pattern on doubled, knotted thread. This can often be done while you wait.

2

The black beads

A few rolled away, or some have chipped.

Missing kali poth matched by size and sheen at the counter, placed where they are least noticeable.

3

The chain

A link in the gold portion opened or wore through.

Soldered and polished like any fine chain. Both halves of the piece handled in one visit.

4

The vati or pendant

Dented, hanging loose, or its loop has worn open.

Dents eased out, loops soldered or replaced, settings tightened. Tanmaniya pendants checked stone by stone.

5

The hook

No longer closes with a clean click, or opens on its own.

We re-tension the hook or replace it in matching gold so it closes securely.

6

The length

Too long for daily wear, or too short to sit well.

Shortened or extended with matched beads. Leftover gold goes home with you, or becomes a bracelet.

Thread again, or move to gold wire?

The one decision to make while it is on the bench.

Fresh thread

Thread keeps the traditional drape and costs less than adding gold. Doubled, knotted stringing gives the beads more support, but the thread will wear over time.

Gold wire or chain conversion

The beads move onto fine gold wire or chain. It is more durable than thread, but the added gold costs more and changes the drape slightly.

Whatever your family's style

We work with several regional styles and keep the original pattern.

Maharashtrian vati

The vati's weight wears the thread, so we knot and reinforce where it hangs.

Gujarati & Marwari tanmaniya

Heavier, often diamond-set. Settings checked stone by stone before restringing.

South Indian thali

Restrung on yellow thread or chain, as your family tradition asks.

Modern short styles

Fine chains with a small pendant. Delicate links get a lighter hand.

Only the gold chain failed? Our chain repair page covers that work in detail.

What happens at the counter

We inspect the piece and tell you whether you can wait or need to leave it.

1

Laid out and counted

We lay it on a tray, count the beads and check every part.

2

Price before work

You get the price and timeline first, with any additions itemised.

3

Restrung and repaired

Doubled, knotted thread in the original pattern. Chain and vati work in the same visit.

4

Checked and cleaned

We check the thread and clasp, then clean the piece before pickup.

Questions we hear at the counter

Asked quietly, usually while holding the piece.

Can my mangalsutra be repaired the same day?

Often, yes. Restringing, bead replacement and hook fixes are while-you-wait jobs. Chain or vati work can take longer, and we tell you the honest timeline first.

Is a broken mangalsutra a bad omen?

Daily rubbing wears the thread down. A break means the thread has worn, not that it is an omen.

How much does mangalsutra repair cost?

Restringing is one of the smaller jobs on our bench. Costs rise only when gold is added, itemised before work starts. WhatsApp a photo for a rough idea.

Do you have matching black beads?

Yes. We match beads by size and sheen. If an exact match is not available, we show you the nearest option before restringing.

Should I restring on thread or convert to gold wire?

Thread is cheaper and drapes traditionally, but wears. Gold wire lasts far longer, costs the metal, and falls slightly differently. We lay out both. You choose.

Can you shorten my mangalsutra or make it into a bracelet?

Yes to both. Spare beads and gold go home with you or become a mangalsutra bracelet. Design and price agreed first.

My thali is on yellow thread. Do you handle South Indian styles?

Yes. We work on thalis with yellow thread, tanmaniyas and vati styles.

Can I wait in the shop while it is done?

You can wait in the shop for a simple restringing. Longer jobs get a pickup time when we quote them.

Bring every part with you

Bring the piece and any loose beads. We quote first, and simple restringing can often be done while you wait.
