Diwali 2026 at home, your family's way: when to do the puja, how to do it, and what to keep ready

September 14, 2026Pick your tradition, 4 min readBy Shivam Jain

Mumbai does not do one Diwali. The Sindhi family in Chembur Camp washes coins in milk at a small clay shrine. The Gujarati trader two lanes down lays the same coins on a red account book. The Maharashtrian home worships a new broom, and the Tamil family has finished its festival by breakfast. If you grew up with one of these and now run your own home, this page is the phone call to your mother, written down: what to prepare two days before, the day before, and what to do on the day, with Mumbai timings.

The main evening

Sunday 8 November, 6:27 to 8:27 PM in Mumbai

Two days before

  1. 1Finish the cleaning. Make or order the faral: karanji, ladoo, chakli, chivda, shankarpale.
  2. 2Buy utane, til oil, the bitter karit fruit, dhane and gul, and a new broom.
  3. 3Decide the silver for the Lakshmi Pujan: a Lakshmi Ganesh murti or image, one diya for the aarti, a small katori for haldi and kumkum. Coins and jewellery already in the house go on the plate.

The day before

  1. 1Rangoli at the door and the akashkandil up. Lamps washed, wicks and oil ready.
  2. 2Vasubaras (Thursday) if your family keeps it: the cow and calf are worshipped, and milk, curd and ghee are skipped that day.
  3. 3Dhanteras evening (Friday): flour diyas for the men of the house, the lamp for Yama at dusk, dhane-gul offered and shared. Buying in the 6:35 to 8:35 PM window.

On the day

  1. 1Before sunrise on Sunday: a warm til oil massage, then the abhyangasnan, the festival bath, with utane (the herbal bath powder) instead of soap. Crush the bitter karit fruit under the big toe after.
  2. 2New clothes, faral, lamps through the day.
  3. 3Evening, 6:27 to 8:27 PM: Lakshmi Pujan. Ganesh first, then Lakshmi, with the family's coins, jewellery and the new broom placed before her. The broom is worshipped with haldi-kumkum and kept clean, never stepped on.
  4. 4Offer lahya, batase and dhane-gul; aarti; one lamp kept burning all night.
  5. 5Monday, Padwa: the wife does aukshan for her husband, waving the lit lamp before him, and he gives her the gift. Padwa is one of the three and a half days of the year that need no muhurat, so gold bought that morning needs no other timing.
  6. 6Wednesday, Bhaubeej: the sister does aukshan for her brother between 1:30 and 3:46 PM, and he gives the ovalni gift.

Keep ready

The Lakshmi Ganesh puja itself, in ten steps

The version most Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati guides agree on, for the Sunday evening window. About twenty minutes from the first diya to the prasad.

  1. 1Clean the house and the puja space. Bathe, wear fresh clothes, draw the rangoli and a swastik at the threshold.
  2. 2Set a wooden chowki facing east or north, spread the red cloth, draw a swastik on it with roli and akshat.
  3. 3Fill the kalash with water and a little Gangajal. Add rice, a pinch of roli and one coin, tie the red mauli thread round the neck, and set mango leaves and a coconut on top.
  4. 4Seat Ganesh and Lakshmi. Ganesh is worshipped first. Put the family's coins, jewellery and account books on a plate in front.
  5. 5Light the ghee diya and the agarbatti. Sit facing east or north, hold rice, a flower and a few drops of water, and take the sankalp, the short spoken intention that opens the puja.
  6. 6Ganesh puja: kumkum, akshat, a flower, durva, a sweet.
  7. 7Lakshmi puja: if your family does abhishek, bathe the metal murti in panchamrit, wipe and reseat it. Offer mauli, haldi-kumkum, flowers, a garland.
  8. 8Offer the food: kheel, batasha, sweets, fruit, paan-supari. Chant the mantra your family uses; Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah is the common one.
  9. 9Aarti with camphor, then prasad.
  10. 10Light the lamps through the house, threshold first, and keep one burning all night.

Timings follow the Mumbai panchang. The steps for each tradition come from community associations, temple sites and regional press. Where those sources disagree, the plan says so.

Frequently asked questions

When is Lakshmi Puja in Mumbai in 2026?

Sunday 8 November, 6:27 to 8:27 PM, the window after sunset. The Narak Chaturdashi oil bath is the same Sunday before sunrise, 5:45 to 6:42 AM. Timings on this page are worked out for Mumbai; most Hindi sites print Delhi's, which open about half an hour earlier.

I live away from my parents. What is the minimum I need to do Lakshmi Puja properly?

A clean corner, a red cloth, an image or murti of Lakshmi and Ganesh, one diya, a small plate with whatever coins or jewellery you have, and the ten steps on this page. Everything else is a tradition you can add next year. Call your mother during the sankalp; that is what most first-timers actually do.

Which day does a Gujarati family do the puja, and which day does a Maharashtrian family?

Both on Sunday 8 November, but differently. Gujarati homes do Chopda Pujan, the account books with coins on them, in one of the day's good windows, most often 6:02 to 10:47 PM. Maharashtrian homes do Lakshmi Pujan with the new broom between 6:27 and 8:27 PM. The Sindhi puja at the hatri, the Marwari ledger puja and the Punjabi Lakshmi Ganesh puja all fall the same evening.

What is Diwali Padwa, and why does the husband give a gift?

Padwa, also called Bali Pratipada, is Monday 9 November this year. In Maharashtrian homes the wife does aukshan for her husband, waving the lamp before him, and he gives her a gift. It is also one of the three and a half days of the year that need no muhurat, so gold bought that day needs no separate timing. Gujarati homes mark the same Monday as Bestu Varas, the new year.

What does a Tamil family do on Deepavali if there is no Lakshmi Puja?

The oil bath before sunrise on Sunday 8 November, with the elder applying the oil, then new clothes marked with turmeric, and the Deepavali marundhu eaten before anything sweet. Some homes add a Lakshmi Kubera puja in the evening. The lamps come later, on Karthigai Deepam, 24 November.

Which metal items are actually used, and which are just nice to have?

Used in the ritual: one diya for the aarti, a kalash, a panchpatra and achmani for the water, a katori for haldi-kumkum, and the murti or image. Coins and a Lakshmi Ganesh bar go on the plate or the books. Everything decorative can be anything you like. We photograph pieces with weights and the day's rate on WhatsApp so you can decide from home.

Is Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11 November?

The North Indian, Marathi and Gujarati Bhai Dooj, Bhaubeej and Bhai Bij fall on Wednesday 11 November, tilak 1:30 to 3:46 PM in Mumbai. Bengali calendars place Bhai Phonta on Tuesday 10 November. Follow your family's calendar; the difference is in how dwitiya is reckoned.
